South Africa’s Rand Refinery forms strategic partnership with Ghana’s Gold Coast

Fri Jan 23 2026

Rand Refinery, Africa’s leading London Bullion Market Association (LBMA) Good Delivery–accredited refiner, entered into a strategic partnership with Gold Coast Refinery (GCR) earlier this month.

The agreement between Rand Refinery and GCR will see Rand Refinery provide Technical, Operational and Commercial (TOC) supervision, enabling the local refining of artisanal and small-scale mining (ASM) material and the achievement of internationally recognised assaying and refining standards.

Established in 2016, Gold Coast Refinery is a gold refinery based in Accra, Ghana, with a refining capacity of more than 80 tonnes per annum and potential for future expansion.

GCR has also signed an agreement with the Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod) to refine up to 1,000 kilograms of ASM gold doré per week, in line with responsible mining and sourcing standards. The government-owned Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod) is the sole entity authorised to buy, sell, and export gold produced by small-scale miners in Ghana.

“The signing of this agreement is a momentous occasion, and Rand Refinery, as the leading LBMA Good Delivery–accredited refiner on the continent, stands ready to support the Ghanaian government’s aspirations for local refining through our partnership with Gold Coast Refinery,” says Rand Refinery CEO, Dean Subramanian.

“We are committed to working with GCR and GoldBod to implement the necessary frameworks to ensure all sourced material meets international responsible sourcing requirements.”

As an LBMA-accredited refinery, Rand Refinery enforces strict, independently audited compliance processes to eliminate conflict gold, combat money laundering, and ensure strong environmental, social and governance (ESG) practices throughout its supply chain. The refinery prioritises sustainability through its People, Planet, Product and Provenance framework, aimed at ensuring Africa’s gold benefits local communities while minimising environmental impact.

Through these strategic partnerships, Rand Refinery continues to strengthen its footprint across the African continent as a preferred refining partner—supporting and enabling local ASM refining while ensuring ethical sourcing and transparency. Rand Refinery remains committed to the development of Africa’s ASM sector as a key contributor to national economic growth.
