Digital gold exchange among plans to modernise Guyana’s gold industry

GUYANA is looking to establish a digital gold trading exchange as part of a broader strategy to modernise the country’s gold and jewellery industry and position the sector for greater domestic and international activity.

This is according to Technical Consultant at the Ministry of Natural Resources Dominic Gaskin, who said the proposed exchange is among several strategic initiatives being pursued under a comprehensive development strategy aimed at transforming the industry into a modern, technology-driven sector.

During an appearance on the Starting Point podcast, Gaskin said the digital exchange would require significant improvements to Guyana’s information and communications technology (ICT) and financial services infrastructure.

He explained that the proposed platform is expected to facilitate a large volume of transactions in real time, requiring the country’s existing systems to be assessed and strengthened where necessary.

“We need, for instance, one of the strategic initiatives is a digital trading exchange, a digital gold trading exchange,” Gaskin said.

He noted that professional consultants in ICT and finance would be required to determine the specific infrastructure needed to make the initiative functional, adding that the existing financial system would have to be capable of supporting potentially hundreds of transactions in real time.

Against this backdrop, he stated that the proposed exchange forms part of a wider effort to move Guyana’s gold and jewellery sector away from traditional methods and towards greater efficiency, productivity and technological integration.

According to Gaskin, the overarching strategy seeks a structural transformation of the industry, including increased investment, production, sales and exports.

The digital trading platform is also expected to support the broader ambition of making Guyana a recognised gold and jewellery hub by 2030 under the El Dorado Reimagined national brand.

However, Gaskin stressed that the digital exchange cannot be developed in isolation, pointing to financial services as one of several critical areas that must improve if Guyana is to compete with established international gold and jewellery centres.

He also identified security and logistics as major requirements, particularly given the high value of gold and jewellery being traded and transported.
