Taiwan’s gold reserves rank 13th worldwide, as surging prices have pushed the value of Central Bank gold holdings to record highs, according to Visual Capitalist.

Gold prices briefly surged past NT$176,000 (US$5,600) per ounce last week before experiencing an unusually sharp bout of volatility, drawing intense market attention, per Liberty Times. Despite the turbulence, CNBC reported Wednesday that many analysts remain bullish on gold and see the recent sell-off as a temporary correction.

Based on an estimated price of about NT$173,000 per ounce, Visual Capitalist said the US remains the world’s largest official holder of gold, with 8,133.5 metric tons valued at about NT$45.4 trillion. This is far ahead of second-ranked Germany, which holds roughly 3,350.3 metric tons worth an estimated NT$18.6 trillion.

Taiwan placed 13th globally, with gold reserves of around 424 metric tons valued at approximately NT$2.36 trillion. It trails Poland’s 543 metric tons valued at about NT$3.02 trillion in 12th place, but remains well ahead of Portugal’s 383 metric tons worth an estimated NT$2.14 trillion in 14th.

Based on Visual Capitalist estimates using a gold price of about NT$173,000 per ounce, the top 10 central bank gold reserve holders are as follows:
