Responsible Gold ETPs: Higher Costs, Better Protection?
Thu Oct 09 2026
In a context of high inflation and growing concerns about debt levels, some investors are looking at hard assets, a term that traditionally mostly covered products like gold, but nowadays also includes Bitcoin in the eyes of many.
One reason “digital gold” Bitcoins are often popular is that they are easier to own and trade than physical gold. But of course, the financial industry is also offering solutions to own gold through exchange-traded investment products, which try to make gold ownership as hassle-free as possible. ETPs are not limited to gold ETPs, and are financial instruments that trade like the underlying commodity, while trading on stock exchanges just like a regular company share.
In parallel, sustainable finance is growing, as investors demand transparency regarding adherence to environmental, social, and governance (ESG) standards. And in the case of gold ETPs, the metal’s provenance and whether it was produced ethically are also in focus. As a result, a distinct segment of explicitly labeled “Responsible Gold ETPs” has emerged. These vehicles differentiate themselves not necessarily through the physical composition of the bullion (since most conventional ETPs can hold LBMA-certified bars) but by formalizing ethical mandates, offering enhanced traceability, and actively targeting sustainability-conscious investors.
A new study by researchers at the Universidad de León in Spain is analyzing the liquidity and safe haven properties of these responsible gold ETPs. They found that these instruments show price resilience during bond market shocks, but also command a structural transaction “price of ethics”. They published their findings in Research in International Business and Finance, under the title “The price of ethics: Liquidity and safe haven properties of responsible physical gold ETPs”.
What Makes Responsible Gold ETPs Unique
For this study, the researchers used the “Gold ETF Holdings and Flows” database (December 2025) from the World Gold Council (Goldhub). The analysis was limited to ETPs domiciled in North America and Europe that satisfy the requirement of physical gold backing. The selection also removed multi-asset vehicles that invest in baskets of precious metals and all currency-hedged instruments.
Besides gold ETPs data, they also used the Geopolitical Risk GPR index, measured fixed-income and equity market distress via the MOVE Index and the VIX Index, respectively, and estimated investors’ attention with Google Search Volume for the terms “Sustainable Gold” and “ESG Investing”. Out of 29 LBMA-Compliant ETPs (London Bullion Market Association), they analyzed 5 responsible gold ETPs.
Responsible Gold ETPs’ Characteristics
The first finding of this study is that responsible gold ETPs are associated with significantly wider bid-ask spreads than conventional LBMA-certified gold ETPs. The illiquidity ratio reveals that this spread premium does not correspond to a structural premium in market depth, but a structural premium.
The LBMA funds are also substantially larger and display a significantly higher turnover value ($122.8M vs. $0.9M), although both increased in market value in the same fashion after 2024.Another discovery is that while gold traditionally hedges equity market stress, responsible gold ETPs appear to display greater resilience during bond market stress.
“These results suggest that Responsible Gold ETPs combine wider spreads under normal market conditions with a comparatively more favorable response during episodes of bond market stress.”
These findings are consistent with a possible “flight-to-responsibility” mechanism. “The absence of a comparable response to equity volatility (VIX interactions) suggests that Responsible Gold may operate as a specialized defensive instrument against fixed income and sovereign debt instability.” Lastly, the study found that the responsible gold market has significantly matured over time, with a structural shift in the determinants of liquidity:
- Inception Phase (2020–2022): ESG attention was associated with wider spreads, reflecting novelty effects and information frictions.
- Maturation Phase (2023–2025): Thematic attention is associated with tighter spreads and enhances liquidity.
“The combination of a structurally positive premium and its altered relationship with ESG attention suggests that Responsible Gold is moving from a sentiment-driven novelty toward a regime characterized by a stable structural premium.”
Comparing Gold ETPs
The finding of this study points to the interesting fact that responsible gold ETPs are not just a way to satisfy ESG criteria on gold sourcing, but could provide a structural difference from other ETPs. Notably, they could provide a greater hedge against stress in the bond markets than the equity markets, but at a premium price.
So responsible sourcing appears associated with a trade-off between transaction costs and resilience during bond-market stress, making product selection part of portfolio risk management. The 5 responsibly sourced ETPs used in this study can be compared to the largest “normal” gold ETPs:

Considering the consistent premium in the spread of responsible Gold ETPs, it would make sense for interested investors to target a longer holding period, limiting the cost of moving in and out of these instruments.
In addition, they should also pay attention to the expense ratio, with both traditional gold ETPs and responsible gold ETPs displaying strong differences in expense ratio between different products.
In general, investors will also need to remember that financial instruments like ETPs naturally have larger counterparty risks than direct ownership of the underlying commodity. So they should look as well at liquidity and the reputation of the firm issuing them, and not just try to minimize costs like spread and fees.
The Business Behind Gold Investment Products
WisdomTree
Responsible gold ETPs are one among many of the new financial instruments providing institutional and retail investors with low-fee access to new services. Exchange-traded products can simplify access to investment markets, although liquidity, transaction costs, and diversification benefits vary by product.
A good example of companies providing this service is WisdomTree, with a total of $170B of assets under management, of which $103B is in the USA.
As the company has hit a record AUM in 2026, it has also seen its revenues and earnings grow quickly, thanks to the acquisition of Atlantic House and organic growth from innovative products.
“The addition of Atlantic House advances our strategy of expanding in structurally growing areas of asset management, including active ETFs, outcome-oriented strategies and managed models. By combining differentiated derivatives expertise with our global distribution, we are strengthening our ability to innovate and deliver more differentiated solutions that support long-term value for both our clients and our stockholders.”
This acquisition also reflected consolidation in the financial industry, where size provides key advantages regarding compliance, ability to deliver low fees, and synergy in cross-distribution between different national markets.
This is also an advantage in R&D and creating new derivative products, as it spreads the costs over a larger organization and promotes them to a wider customer base.
Regarding financial innovation, WisdomTree is an early mover into tokenization, having created a tokenized money market fund (WTGXX) with 24/7 trading and settlement. It is also a leader in the financialization of commodities-related investments like farmland and timberland through Ceres Partners, acquired in 2025.
Investment in WisdomTree’s equity does not offer direct exposure to the underlying commodities or stocks, but to the “pick and shovels” that make these investments possible, benefiting from the trends of globalization and financialization.
